Description:

Hailed as "America’s most beautiful road" by Charles Kuralt, this All American Road covers 64 breathtaking miles between Cooke City and Red Lodge. Steep switchbacks lead to a plateau at nearly 11,000 feet. Here, high above the timberline, you’ll feel like you are on top of the world. Plentiful national forest campgrounds and trailheads provide opportunities to explore on foot. Limited shoulders, switchbacks and rougher pavement south of the Montana border make this ride a better fit for the more experienced rider.

DIRECTIONS:

Beginning at Cooke City, just east of the northeastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park, travel east on Highway 212 to Red Lodge. Interact with the map for further details.

Tips from Other Riders:

POSTED BY: Jim 6/14/08: Be prepared for inclement weather no matter how nice it is in Red Lodge.
POSTED ON: 6/3/08: Take warm clothes. There are snow skiers on top in July! Watch for small fallen rocks on the switchbacks. Take lots of pictures....absolutely breathtaking views. Possible return through Sunlight basin via Belfry to Red Lodge. Travelling from Red Lodge to Cooke City you will see this road on your left before Cooke City. Very scenic there also. Enjoy!
