Reducing Crashes in Montana
The Montana Department of Transportation has analyzed motorcycle crash data for the past 10 years. Following the
recommendations below will help reduce the number of severe and fatal crashes in Montana.
Motorcyclists:
- Adapt speed in curves, particularly downhill
- Adapt speed to road surface conditions
- Watch out for surface drop offs
- Be visible: keep headlight on at all times
- Wear a helmet
- Wear protective clothing, with reflective material
- Plan your trip - try to avoid construction zones
- Have a valid license with proper endorsement
- Never ride after consuming alcohol and/or drugs or when tired or fatigued
Motorists:
- Watch out for motorcycles
- They are more difficult to see
- It’s difficult to accurately judge their speed
- Exercise extreme caution
- When entering road from STOP sign
- When changing lanes
- When making left turns
- Leave adequate space between your vehicle and others for safe stopping
